Agroelliniko is a citizen based initiative in Athens, which made use of a small part of the enormous old airport and started a communal orchard. The allotment was given to the citizens involved by the sub-prefecture through a concession, and is now an inspiring model for possible future uses of an airport which has served foreign military purposes and hosted parts of the Olympic Games in 2004. The future of the whole area is uncertain, given the current economical and political situation in Greece. The bright side of the story is that while investors cannot invest, projects like this can arise and gain strength to maintain itself.
