Autonome school Knallerbse // Pfeifferhof Graz

The private school Knallerbse has been established 20 years ago by a group of teacher and parents. After having a kindergarden, where the children could  learn according to their times and needs the parents of the children decided that it would be wrong to destroy all the achievements of this alternative learning model by sending their children to a public school. So they decided to open their own school with a mix of new methods including the ones of the reform paedagogy like montesouri. The school started basic democratic with no hierarchy at all. the time and amount of children shaped this model to the concept that the parents are still very much involved in running the school, but can not interfere with the teaching methods as the there are too many children. The school couldn’t run without the participatory element of the parents. The parents are paying a fee for the school according to their income. The children can visit  the school until they are 15.Then they can decide if they want to continue school in a public school. The main problem the children face then is the time management as they are not used to work under pressure and were able to learn according to their needs before. one main point what they take with them after leaving the knallerbse is that they learned learning is something good and the emotions for learning are positive.
