Dear alterNation inhabitants and visitors,

Since last fall we have been to a number of countries around the globe, documenting initiatives that shape this new, self-managed, citizen-based nation. alterNation is so far composed of pieces of Germany, France, Greece, Japan, Hong Kong, United States, Canada and Austria. And after this long journey, we will be focusing on filming our home base, Berlin.

Our efforts to personally collect the stories for this rising movement is so that we can offer a solid preview of what is happening in various domains of society in different parts of the world. Initiatives by people who took charge of their realities and are simply re-inventing them, alternatively to the structure that had been proposed/imposed so far.

We are currently talking to independent media makers from various countries around the globe. People who have been documenting their countries’ or cities’ transition.

alterNation would like to invite all fellow initiators who have been researching and/or documenting such initiatives in your cities or countries and media makers who are passionate about the big shift we are going through, to share with the rest of the world the ideas and experiences you have been witnessing or taking part in. Knowledge exchange is really important for the time period we are living in and key to the process of re-designing societies. And your work is yet another independent media initiative that we think should be shared.

The commons concept has spread to all domains, and now we are granted access to mechanisms, that empower and allow us to learn and interfere in processes as common citizens that find in self-organization and horizontal, flexible models, the motivation to do something meaningful to ourselves, to our surroundings and our immediate societies.

Ultimately, this movement will restructure our notion of society, as we see local initiatives taken to a global context, where they inspire one another.

The movement is so far unnamed or has various denominations, but regardless of what it could be called, it has a proactive and subtle approach to our most basic needs as human beings and the challenges of this transition period. How do these new proposals respond to an ever-changing reality? We are eager to see what is happening around you.

Become a collaborator by contacting us. We’ll have a chat online and grant you access to upload not only videos and photos, but also texts, and your research, which will be made available to the public under the creative commons license you find more appropriate.

We look forward to hearing from you!
